<image:caption>We have done lots of knocking on doors and shortlisting all the places we think you need to know about, in and around Chinon. Here’s our guide to local hangouts, markets, delicious restaurants, the best boulangeries and brocantes, wild swimming and picnicking spots, how to hire bikes and where to ride them to…and more. Good places can go bad, and bad places do, on occasion, turn good! We try to keep this page as current and up-to-date as possible. Do tell us if you have comments or any feedback! PS: The French are very courteous. Don’t attempt anything without a “Bonjour Madame/Monsieur.” It makes it nice for everyone!</image:caption>

<image:title>Huismes - Our lovely local village, this is charming place to visit. Here are some suggestions for what to do and how to get there:</image:title>
<image:caption>As you may be able to glean from the Napoleonic map above, we are delightfully close to this pretty village. The meandering La Loire À Vélo cycle path runs right outside La Fuye, to Huismes. Bike up there one evening (it’s a 5km ride from the house) and enjoy a simple dinner on the terrace of the very casual bistrot/bar Le Jeanne D’Arc (+33 2 47 58 92 53). It has pretty generous opening times (1 April-30 October 830am-9pm ‘non-stop’. Outside these dates it’s also open but closes briefly between 3pm-6pm daily). Booking is recommended as it can get busy and serves a very loyal, local clientele.</image:caption>

<image:title>Huismes</image:title>
<image:caption>There is also a small, sporadic Sunday market in the village centre - opposite Le Jeanne D’Arc Bistrot with its welcoming outdoor terrace (pictured) - selling oysters* as well as fresh local vegetables. Buy some to enjoy back on the terrace at La Fuye (see below for inspiration!). *although not between the months of April and October</image:caption>

<image:title>Huismes</image:title>
<image:caption>Keep going a little bit further (4km from Huismes; 9km from La Fuye) and you reach the one of the Loire Valley’s most charming, secluded and lesser-known Châteaux: Château d’Ussé - the so-called Sleeping Beauty Château as it was said to have inspired the fairytale. If you don’t have time to go inside it, I’m quite a fan of a drive by: taking in the view of the whole castle, in all its magnificence, from Rue de la Loire and the Pont sur l’Indre.</image:caption>

<image:title>Huismes</image:title>
<image:caption>Huismes was also home to Max Ernst, pioneer of the Dada movement and surrealism. You can visit his house which is now a museum and learn more about the man behind the movement. More info here.</image:caption>

<image:title>MARKETS</image:title>
<image:caption>Chinon also has a very small Saturday Morning Market just outside the Marie/Café des Arts as well as a slightly larger Sunday Market (also just by the Marie) selling seafood, cheese, fruit and veg (open 9am-1pm). There is usually a great atmosphere in town; go local and have a coffee on the square before slipping down a side street for an €8 platter of oysters, washed down with a chilled glass of white. The place you are looking for is Le XV (15 Rue Rabelais).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fournil du Chateau is excellent and sits on the cobbled street just around the corner from the Café des Arts in town. It justifies the queue that sometimes snakes out of the door. Try their tarte abricot which is not too sweet (16 rue Jean Jacques Rousseau; closed Sundays - which means they’re open Mondays). Avoine, in the opposite direction, also has a good boulangerie, as well as a good wine shop (see WINE BARS page) and a handy supermarket.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL RESTAURANTS</image:title>
<image:caption>Charbon is another great choice, two doors down from the Cabane à Vin. They specialise in meat, cooked in the old bread oven - over charcoal - as their name suggests. The wine list is excellent and extensive … Julien, the chef-owner, has worked all over the world. His wife Marina works with him. They have also just opened Le Canteen in the old taco restaurant - 3 doors down from Charbon. Casual and very popular, it’s a great lunch spot (lunch only). Also ideal for lunch, try Café Chaud on the square (good salads). Au Chapeau Rouge is lovely for lunch or dinner in the summer months when you can sit out by the fountain. For formal dining, Les Années Trente is hard to beat for a smart dinner (ask for a table upstairs and order any wine from Pascal Lambert). No outdoor dining though. There are good pizzas, pastas and salads to be had at Les Saveurs d’Italie (pizza can also be served ‘to go’ if you prefer to eat at home). If you’re eating sur place their outdoor tables, weather permitting, are the ones to reserve.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL RESTAURANTS</image:title>
<image:caption>-If you’re VEGETARIAN, Un Air d’Antan can cater for you if you call ahead and ‘warn’ them. Otherwise the new comer Au Local, right by the Château de Chinon, comes much recommended for its full vegetarian menu - as well as for its regular, non-veg one. Another local, new and well reviewed restaurant, with plenty of vegetables as the name rather implies (but by no means a vegetarian restaurant) is just a little out of town in nearby Ligré: Les Jardiniers. The couple behind it used to run the successful Chinon restaurant, La Part des Anges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On market days (Thursdays), the place for lunch, in the thick of it all, is Hotel de La Treille with its lovely vine trellis and outdoor tables in the summer months. Booking is essential - or come early and bag a spot. Sit and watch the world go by.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the summer, the pop-up, open-air and deliciously informal Guinguette de Chinon on Rive Gauche is a must for its stunning view of the chateau (pictured) and riverside dining and/or drinking. It’s an ideal venue for dinner after a game of tennis - the Chinon tennis courts are walking distance from La Guinguette (closed in bad weather). Read on to the end of this page for details of the new guinguette, very close to La Fuye, called La Bamboche. Boat tours, kayaks and canoes can also be organised from where the Chinon Guinguette is situated - see our BOAT TOURS page for more info.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There is a new guinguette that has opened up right next to La Fuye called La Bamboche (actually in Néman, about 7km away). Definitely worth a visit - this (pictured) is the vibe and the view it serves up, along with food from a selection of different food trucks. It also has an excellent and varied wine list. There is no need to book - you can’t! - just turn up and see what’s on offer. These pop-up riverside bars are strictly summertime only and deliciously informal by nature. They’re also very active on their Facebook page.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For near by rustic, local food head to Auberge de Côteaux. A hearty, lunchtime bistrot in wine growing Cravant-les-Côteaux - a neighbouring village next to Chinon and a picturesque 15-minute drive from La Fuye. Try the wine by Philippe Alliet. Booking recommended. Same but different, yet with a similar charm - and even closer to us - is Bistrot Le Jeanne d’Arc in our nearby village of Huismes. Read about it here (you can cycle to it in15 mins, door-to-door). <image:caption>We have a number of friends who produce excellent, organic, local wine, some of which is sold in the George V in Paris. If you are interested in any Chinon wine recommendations, please get in touch with us at frog@lafuye.com and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. Tours of vineyards and degustations are possible - again, pls ask if you’d like more info. <image:caption>Joules is your captain - he runs all the boat tours in Chinon. The Vienne has pockets of quite strong currents, so taking a boat out on your own and navigating the Vienne is not an option. There are different packages and choices available, depending on how many you are/whether or not you want to be with other people/what season it is. Here is Julien’s board of scheduled departures, as well as his contact number (+33 06 76 74 51 14). He offers a charcuterie board and local wine if you request it in advance (at an understandable extra charge).</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you want to go a touch smarter and still sit next to the banks of the Loire, then we love nearby Bréhémont’s La Cabane à Matelot (17km/20 mins): Romain is a Loire fisherman and a bit of a cook; Ambroise is a professional chef and also a fisherman…and together they created La Cabane. Fish is caught by Romain and served with flair by Ambroise. Creative cooking with river fish; great atmosphere. Seating is outside only, so it’s a seasonal choice. It is on the Loire à Vélo cycle route; cyclists are welcome. PS: This was the view from our table.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Copied across for completeness from our page on Chinon restaurants (as I don’t really consider them to be out of town, but technically they are) is authentic and charming Auberge de Côteaux (10km/15 mins). <image:title>LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING - Patisseries</image:title>
<image:caption>Patisserie Ayrole is best-in-class and the inventors of the ruby red Tarte Vigneronne - which is a local delicacy made from thin slices of apple set in a Chinon wine jelly, with a slightly caramelised mille-feuille base (delicious - try it!). You can’t go too far wrong with anything from here though (5 Rue Neuve de L’Hôtel de Ville). Fournil du Chateau - albeit a boulangerie and not a patisserie - has great, more rustic puds in mini format only. Order a day in advance if you want things in a larger size.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING - Cheese</image:title>
<image:caption>For wonderful French cheese, look no further than the relatively new Laiterie Gilbert, tucked away in the far corner of Place Hofheim. They have a good selection of local and regional cheeses as well as all the classics. (There is also an excellent cheese truck that comes to town for the Thursday market.) Biocoop (very close to us) also sells some great cheese too as well as locally produced watercress.</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING - Charcuterie</image:title>
<image:caption>You have to go further-a-field than Chinon to find one, but it’s worth the short 20-minute drive to Azay-le-Rideau, where you will be delighted by Hardouin and their renowned charcuterie. Stop for lunch in town, (try L’Épine) and then wander around the Château d’Azay (read our page here for more details on it).</image:caption>

<image:title>LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING - Butchers</image:title>
<image:caption>Boucherie Martin in Chinon (11 Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau) has a good selection of meat (open Monday-Saturday 8am-1pm; 3pm-7pm and Sunday 8am-1pm. Closed Mondays). There is also Ondet, opposite Cafe des Arts. However, the star of the show is our exceptional, family-run butcher in Huismes, which is very close to La Fuye, called Boucherie Beugnet (open 8:45am-1pm; 3:30pm-7pm Monday, Thursday-Saturday; Wednesday 08:45am-1pm; 4:40pm-7pm and Sunday 9am-12:30pm). He is regionally renowned. For more info on the charming little hamlet of Huismes, read our page on it here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Les 4 Saisons (on the roundabout towards La Roche-Clermault) is over on the other side of the river. This has quite a following. <image:title>SUPERMARKETS</image:title>
<image:caption>L’Eclerc - huge and very close by. On the useful, if not very beautiful, Blanc Carroi industrial estate along with a Bricomarché, a petrol station, Norauto and much more. Opening times: 9h-20h (with extended summer hours). They also have a click and collect service called L’Eclerc Drive - very handy to do in advance of your stay with us! L’Eclerc does not close for lunch, but most of the other shops on the industrial estate do. There is also a large Super-U on the other side of the river, in Chinon, and Avoine has a mid-sized Carrefour Contact supermarket too. There is a handy little Carrefour right in the centre of Chinon - it is open over lunchtime and also extends its opening times over the summer months. Much smaller than L’Eclerc, but much more manageable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Try the very charming and idyllic La Boutique Bleue in town, tucked away in the corner of the square shared with Café des Arts. Emmaüs is also great fun, although not for the faint hearted. It’s a charity-run rummage-fest and occupies several buildings. Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (2pm-6pm), it’s great for the odd piece of furniture and vintage china but you have to be a committed brocanter to love it (46 Route de Saumur).</image:caption>

<image:caption>More organised and edited (but a 45-minute drive away) but still with a definite house-clearance vibe is one of my favourites: Brocante de la Vallée in Beaufort-en-Vallée. It’s perfect for a rainy afternoon and is open most days, including Sundays (call ahead to check before making the drive). Prices are good and you can bargain gently if you are buying in volume!</image:caption>

<image:title>BROCANTES & ANTIQUE SHOPPING</image:title>
<image:caption>On the third Sunday of the month, there is the Brocante Menseuelle de Chinon set up along the lime-tree lined Promenade Docteur Mattraits and Place Tiverton. This runs all year round and is well worth a visit if your trip happens to coincide with it. There is also a charming riverside Puce de Montsoreau not too far away (many of the same stall holders attend both). Montsoreau’s brocante really is in a stunning setting (fun to stroll through, even if your not a committed brocanteur) and takes place on the second Sunday of the month (double check it’s open before visiting). If you’re going to Montsoreau, check out our page of out of town restaurants here, two of which are in Montsoreau (book well ahead if the Puce is on). This is a brilliant website to find out what is on when you are staying with us, and where. Select region 37 - Indre-et-Loire for a list of every brocante-type event on in our department. You can hone your results by date and type of event too (brocantes, book sales, vide-greniers* etc). *vide-greniers are the French equivalent to car boot sales and the word translates, literally, as ‘emptying the attic’ - sounds so much nicer!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chinon’s wine bars (Cabane à Vin and Cave Voltaire) tend to close 8pm-ish (check both though, as sometimes they may stay open if there are a lot of people). Le Café Français is a bar, tucked down behind the Maire, and a good option for a late night drink (open 5pm-1am). It has recently gone under new ownership. There is also the pub, Le XV - which is new in town and has a pool tables with a river view: the pub-vibe somewhat off-set by also serving oysters with a glass of white wine on Sundays. Move on to the boîte de nuit La Place, which is just next door to the Cabane à Vin (arrive after 1am to see it in full-swing). They serve drinks on their terrace before opening time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>La Chapelle Sainte-Radegonde is well worth a visit (you can park in the public car park opposite the boulangerie ‘Les Tours des Pains’; you can only access Radegonde by foot). Not only does getting there involve a lovely view of Chinon and a good walk, but the small, ruined chapel is noteworthy for being hewn into the tuffeau (local limestone unique to the Loire Valley) rock and for its 12th-century murals, including one of the very few visual representations of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her family. The chapel extends via several galleries and tunnels, including one that leads to a well dating back to Roman times. There are signs in Chinon indicating the walking route and it is a good uphill hike. If you are going from the fortress, it is about a 20-minute walk but the views of Chinon are excellent. Check ahead of visiting whether the Chapelle is open, (it is closed over winter) but even if it’s not, it’s a lovely place to walk to and see the town from.</image:caption>

Make a day of it and take in either of the big guns that are Château de Chambord or Château de Chenonceau on your way to or from. There is also La Spa Source, La Roche-Posay, which is world renowned and focused on the therapeutic qualities of their spring water. It is marginally closer too - but you won’t be able to off set your beauty treatment with buildings, as you can above. <image:title>PICNICS & WILD SWIMMING</image:title>
<image:caption>This is great fun, but be warned, La Vienne is a fairly fast-flowing river. It is easy to swim against the current though, in certain places, and La Belle Laveuse is Chinon’s designated swimming spot. Bring a picnic lunch and sit on the sandy riverbank after your dip. (If you’re planning to go here, check with us first as sometimes during the summer you can’t swim due to algae). Usually pretty deserted, it’s a lovely in-town picnic spot, even if you’re not swimming. The iron bridge that spans the river, that you duck under to reach La Belle Laveuse, was designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel.</image:caption>

<image:title>PICNICS & WILD SWIMMING</image:title>
<image:caption>There is also a beautiful picnic spot (the current is a bit too strong for swimming) should you want to explore further a field: Confluence Beach in Candes-Saint-Martin is a wonderful, small, triangular beach at the meeting point of the River Loire and the Vienne. It opens onto a great view over one of the most beautiful villages in France. More info here.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT - Montsoreau</image:title>
<image:caption>A charming riverside town (also see PICNICS & WILD SWIMMING, above). Well worth a trip, especially if their idyllic Sunday ‘puce’ is on, hailed as the largest brocante in the Loire Valley (see BROCANTES). Beautiful to stroll through, even for non-shoppers. There is a good weekly Sunday (food) market here too. A dedicated cycle route runs from Chinon to Montsoreau and beyond, please ask at the Azay-Chinon Tourist Office in Chinon for more info (also check out our page here on CYCLING).</image:caption>

<image:title>NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT - Azay-le-Rideau</image:title>
<image:caption>With a wonderful and recently refurbished château, you can also hire a canoe here (check the water level first as someone has a sluice gate and half the water in the river disappears if he opens it; if it’s shut, the canoeing is gentle and easy and circles round the château) and picnic on the riverbank. Eat at L’Épine and also collect some excellent charcuterie from award-winning Hardouin.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT - Saumur</image:title>
<image:caption>Plan a trip to coincide with their large Saturday morning market and a possible visit to the Château de Saumur. I say possible, because if you eat lunch first at Le Terrier du Château (pictured), you may feel that you’ve already seen its best angle (plus this château wasn’t really used as a residence, so helps to justify only seeing it from the outside). If you are going to Saumur, make sure you also pop in to the lovely cheese shop there (there are three but La Fromagerie du Puits Neuf is the one to aim for).</image:caption>

<image:title>NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT - The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud</image:title>
<image:caption>This is unmissable, not far from Saumur and so good to take in on the way back to La Fuye if you’re heading to Saumur. Equally it’s only a 30 minutes drive from here, so worth the trip in its own right. One of the largest surviving abbeys - it now houses an art museum, restaurant, and hotel…as well as a unique set of religious buildings and cloisters, all superbly restored. You can see the Plantagenet tombs of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionheart, in the main abbey. They host incredible concerts here too - check their website to see if there is one on during your stay.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tours is our nearest big city and has a wonderful food market, Halles de Tours (1 Place Gaston Paillhou) near the cobbled old town, and a variety of good shops and restaurants. <image:title>WHICH CHATEAUX?</image:title>
<image:caption>Start with the fairytale Château d’Ussé, the so-called Sleeping Beauty Château - it is said to have inspired the story - and about our nearest. Pictured below, it is exactly 7 minutes’ drive from La Fuye. You could also cycle here and stop for a drink or lunch on the terrace of Le Jeanne d’Arc in Huismes (good for a cold beer or glass of local wine, excellent salads and classic dish of the day). If you don’t have time to go inside Ussé, I’m quite a fan of a drive-by: take in the view of the whole castle, in all its magnificence, from Rue de la Loire and the Pont sur l’Indre.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHICH CHATEAUX?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Château de Chinon is an obvious choice and shouldn’t be missed (the 1000 year old fortress, an emblem of French history and a 10-minute drive from our door … no pressure!). You can book an escape game to play there, in English or French, a series of conundrums to solve in otherwise private parts of the château. Purported to be well set up and great fun, you get the keys to parts of the château no-one else is allowed into (advance booking essential).</image:caption>

<image:title>WHICH CHATEAUX?</image:title>
<image:caption>We also recommend the recently refurbished, very picturesque Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, just 20 minutes away, which has just had €20 million spent on it. It has a beautifully reflective moat, so looks every inch ‘proper château’. It’s also one of the smaller ones, so it’s quite manageable and a good one to bring children to. If you’re going to Azay, try to have lunch at Épine (inside seating only). There is also a good charcuterie shop in town - well worth a visit too.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHICH CHATEAUX?</image:title>
<image:caption>Château de Villandry, with its glorious gardens (and 9 full-time gardeners on the pay roll - see photo below, which was taken last year) is 40 minutes from us. Co-incidentally, the family who own Villandry also used to own Château de La Fuye - now our home and where you are staying - and used it as their private, weekend residence.</image:caption>

<image:title>CHINON WITH CHILDREN - Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt Adventure</image:title>
<image:caption>- about 7 minutes’ drive away - has a brilliant treetop adventure course in the shade of the forest. Courses vary from easy to very challenging and there are lots of zip lines. Suitable for children aged 5-50. Bring cash (it’s cash only) and a picnic. Opening times vary. Aside from tree top adventures, they do also sell ice creams and drinks. Brilliant on a hot day as you’re mostly in the shade of the trees.</image:caption>

<image:title>CHINON WITH CHILDREN - Nail a few of the Châteaux</image:title>
<image:caption>Particularly child-friendly ones include the Château de Chinon with its knights area and you can now also book an escape game to play there, in English or French: a series of conundrums to solve in otherwise private parts of the château. Purported to be well set up and great fun, you get the keys to parts of the chateau no-one else is allowed into (advance booking essential). Don’t overlook fairytale Château de Ussé, (pictured) said to have inspired Charles Perrault's original Sleeping Beauty and indeed they retell the story here through figurine form. It’s our nearest château and slightly ‘off radar’ - recommended.</image:caption>

<image:title>CHINON WITH CHILDREN</image:title>
<image:caption>There are good outdoor playgrounds at Villandry with acres of gardens (pictured) that they can run around in (Villandry employ nine full-time gardeners). Château de Riveau hosts a two-day jousting event in the summer - they also have a good, summer-only restaurant, more info on that here. Picture-perfect Château d’Azay-le-Rideau is one of the ‘smaller’ ones, so quite manageable. It also has a moat, so children deem it to be a ‘proper château’. Lesser-known Château de l'Islette is also great for children.</image:caption>

<image:title>CHINON WITH CHILDREN</image:title>
<image:caption>Then there is the option of tennis on the courts in Chinon (or we know a very good tennis coach who works out of nearby Ligré - just ask us and we can connect you). We can help you organise a boat trip on the Vienne (you can do a cruise and then have dinner on board, or bring your own picnic - read our boating page here) or you can hire a canoe or kayak. Jeff who runs La Petite Reine can help with bike hire if you want to take advantage of the gentle La Loire À Vélo cycle path that run very near La Fuye (he take the hassle out of hiring bikes by dropping them off at the house in advance of your arrival, and collecting them when you’ve gone). Try out the new Green Path that connects Chinon to Richelieu and has lots of ‘stations’ to stop at along the way (see CYCLING). Jeff rents both bikes and e-bikes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Take a picnic lunch and sit on the sandy riverbank while the children swim in the Vienne. WARNING the current is fairly strong - read our page on picnics and wild swimming here. There is a rope hanging from a tree that they can fling themselves into the river from and it’s a good spot from which to enter the water (you can also climb down the bank if you fancy a more sedate entry point</image:caption>

<image:title>CHINON WITH CHILDREN - The Frog Pond</image:title>
<image:caption>A short walk away from La Fuye is the old lavoir - where, historically, people used to gather to do their washing. It’s recently been landscaped and there is the chance to hop about over and through the gentle stream and - if you’re lucky - catch some frogs. Bring a net and a bucket (you can buy them from L’Eclerc). This is where you are headed. There are nearby picnic tables as well as a view of our local watercress production (you can buy it at Biocoop).</image:caption>

<image:caption>There is an award-winning Zoo called Bioparc at Doue-la-Fountain, (there’s another one at Beauval but Bioparc is better); Le Petit Nétilly has a family fun park about 40 minutes away, or try Terra Botanica, in Angers, which is a garden-themed theme park. Kids can have wakeboarding lessons in Mocontour; there is a trampoline centre in Saumur, Last, but not least, try out the huge inflatable water park on the lake at Lac d’Hommes - fun for children of all ages, whether 4 or 44!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The a new cycle route is called the Green Path and connects Richelieu with Chinon by way of an easy 20km carpet. It has lots of good places to stop off at, not too far off-route (there is an app you can download which is helpful, especially if you’re doing this with children). Champigny-sur-Veude is a lovely, unmissable village along the way (stop here for a lakeside picnic). The cycle path is peppered with ‘stations’ that tell you what’s accessible nearby if you were to slightly deviate (you can take in Chateau du Riveau for example). The Green Path connects with the Loire by Bike route (Loire À Vélo). Good physical maps and lots more info can be found at the Tourist Office in Chinon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One starts just 2km from the front door and leads you deep into the countryside of Huismes and past eight beautiful local châteaux (choose from 13.5km long, 12.5km or 7km). All walks start at the lavoir, the old washing pond, that is about 10 minutes’ walk from La Fuye. Here is a link to its position. The Tourist Office map showing the three walking routes can be downloaded here. There is also a longer walk that skirts La Fuye and takes you into and around Chinon and the neighbouring countryside (15km). Download the map here. A vast amount of maps for all over the region can be found courtesy of the Azay-Chinon Tourist Centre’s website. Navigate to >Our Essentials [top of homepage] >Nature, water and soft itineraries >Hiking If you want to go further a field, this is a good website and details a 16km hike from the very near by Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt to Azay-le-Rideau … and more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Golf</image:title>
<image:caption>The best course, closest to us is Golf de Touraine, found not far from Tours, at Ballan-Miré (works well for non-golfers who are able to pop into historic Tours for a spot of lunch and some shopping). There are other golf courses - of varying quality - nearby including: -Roiffé near Fontevraud (can work well if some want to golf, some want to visit the Abbey there but, golf-wise, this course is not as rated as the Golf de Touraine). There is also a 9-hole course in Saint Florent, near Saumur - again, handy if some in your party want to go to Saumur - which has a very good (food) market on Saturdays. Tours also has a course called Golf du Chateau du 7 Tours (north west Tours). Depending which direction you are heading in when you leave, there are quite a few other courses to consider that may be en route, including one at Loches as well as La Roche Posay, which is probably the most notable. North of us is Golf d’Angers (as the name rather suggests, it’s near Angers!) and Baugé.</image:caption>

<image:title>FISHING</image:title>
<image:caption>FLY FISHING ~If you’re in to fly fishing you are in luck, because the Indre-et-Loire (our department) has quite a few spots, our nearest being Bréhémont. Read all about it here. Although the Touraine isn't particularly known for its trout streams, traditionally, the start of the trout season opens the angling season, so it is a much anticipated moment. In fact, the area is crisscrossed by a good many small watercourses which shelter populations of wild trout, as well as being augmented by fishery stock. In order to take the pressure off the wild population the Fédération de Pêche d'Indre-et-Loire releases 1500kg of trout into the category 2 rivers. Rivers and lakes are categorised into Category 1 (those fast flowing rivers where trout and salmon thrive) and Category 2 (slower, warmer waters where coarse fish dominate).</image:caption>

<image:title>WINE - Tasting vs Buying</image:title>
<image:caption>If you want a tasting experience without the pressure or expectation that you will be buying at least some of the wine - the best bet is to do a paid-for tasting (you can, obviously, also buy the wine but don’t feel obliged):</image:caption>

<image:title>WINE - [1] Caves Plouzeau</image:title>
<image:caption>This is our nearest recommended spot for a formal tasting and tour, in the heart of Chinon. They cellar their organic wine in the magnificent caves cut into the rock directly below the Château de Chinon. Marc Plouzeau offers a variety of tasting options. Click here for his page with prices and details on how to book. As you are likely to be less than their stipulated group tour number, they ask that you send an email 2 weeks before and make a special request (or just risk it and turn up —but just not at lunchtime). For the moment, tours and tastings are conducted in French only. Options 2 & 3 (below) are for you if you want bi-lingual/English.</image:caption>

<image:title>WINE - Domaine Bernard Baudry</image:title>
<image:caption>Local winegrowers who played a large part in the organic wine movement and putting Chinon on the world wine map. More for buyers rather than people just wanting to taste wine. You are given an excellent tasting experience and education —but the tasting is free. Matthieu and Bernard are a father and son team and give a wonderfully comprehensive overview of Chinon wine. Start off with their entry level wine which is excellent and inexpensive, (Les Granges) and work your way up to their top cuvée (La Croix Boissée); they will often only part with a small amount of it - get your hands on what you can negotiate buying! Their tasting rooms and caves are a 10 minute drive away. I suggest arriving at 11:30am sharp, assuming they can accommodate you, (email them to book in: they are closed between 12-2pm Mon-Fri) and then having lunch after your tasting at the authentic and charming Auberge de Côteaux, full of wine-makers and just down the road from the Baudry winery). The Domaine Baudry tasting rooms have tranches of the soil and rocks on display for each variety of their wine, which makes trying their various cuvees and creations a real education. Matthieu speaks very good English. They may also be able to help you organise shipping as they supply their wine to most corners of the world; although nothing beats taking it back yourself. —You can’t? You’re flying? Don’t let a plane journey put you off! We are huge fans of the check-in ‘wine suitcase’ that can accommodate up to 12 bottles. Click here for details on how to buy one (or two). Some come with next day delivery.</image:caption>

This is not going to delight any wine connoisseurs - but the experience is fun and accessible. Ask Des and Marie (our friendly and helpful guardians who will welcome you to La Fuye) to book you in if you'd like to go. Short notice is fine! Pascal only speaks French.</image:caption>

<image:title>WINE - Wine Tasting + Art…in a Cave</image:title>
<image:caption>Maison Ackerman are well known for their excellent local Loire bubbles - crémant - and have been in the business of making it since 1811. Their troglodytic labyrinth of caves, carved into the cliff face, are like something out of a fairytale and a visit to them makes for a fun day trip only 40 minutes’ from La Fuye (take the D751 in the direction of Montsoreau if you want a pretty drive there). The quite ‘out there’ contemporary art exhibitions they host are part of an artists’ residency: Ackerman + Fontevraud La Scène, unusually and quite dramatically exhibited within the caves too, making for a fun and unusual wine pairing. Almost always open. Booking recommended.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Flights from the UK</image:title>
<image:caption>Ryan Air flies from London Stanstead to Tours (55km, so around a 45-minute drive from us; you can hire a car at the airport). They run flights throughout the year but with a restricted winter timetable. Over the summer they also offer flights from London Stanstead to Poitiers (98km / 1 hour 15 minutes from La Fuye) and Manchester to Nantes (see below for details on flying into Nantes).</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Flights from London & Europe</image:title>
<image:caption>Easy Jet flies out of London Gatwick but it is also handy if you’re flying to us from within Europe. As well as Paris Orly and CDG, they also fly into Nantes Atlantique which is our largest regional airport and relatively stress-free compared to flying in to Paris. It is closer to us than the Paris airports: 190km / a 2 hour drive. If you arrive (in Nantes) around lunchtime - as Easy Jet flights so often seem to due to their early departure slots, regardless of destination - think about making time for lunch at the show-stopping Art Nouveau brasserie La Cigale before beginning your drive to La Fuye. If you don’t fancy hiring a car, there is a train that goes from the centre of Nantes to Port Boulet - a tiny but handy little station, just 20 minutes’ drive from us. The airport runs a free shuttle bus into the centre of Nantes, making this a fairly accessible option.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Kayak</image:title>
<image:caption>The best way, to check all possible flight option and permutations, is to use kayak - or its equivalent travel search engine - where you can play around with airports and see what suits best for your dates, times and starting points. Our nearest airports, listed in order of proximity and/or convenience are: Tours, Poitiers, Nantes, Paris Charles de Gaulle (has a direct train from inside the airport - see High Speed Trains), Paris Orly (south of Paris, so closer than CDG if you’re driving; but no train).</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Paris</image:title>
<image:caption>Fly in to Paris Charles de Gaulle via one of the usual carriers —and there is a train from inside the airport that takes you to St-Pierre-des-Corps (a dormitory town a few kilometres from Tours; more on that below). Or arrive by Eurostar into Gare du Nord, cross Paris by metro (line 4 goes direct) and pick up the high speed direct train service from Paris-Montparnasse which takes around 1 hour (see below). Car hire is of course also possible from within the airport. If you are flying into Paris-Orly it is the only choice. La Fuye is 310km / 3 hours 45 minutes from CDG and 270km from Orly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - High Speed Train</image:title>
<image:caption>A direct TGV service runs from Terminal 2 at Paris Aéroport Charles de Gaulle to St-Pierre-des-Corps, our nearest high speed train station, which is just 52km / 45 minutes drive from La Fuye. (The train journey is 1hr 50 minutes). Or you can catch the fast train from Gare Montparnasse. It takes just under 1 hour to travel from Paris-Montparnasse to St-Pierre-des-Corps, direct. By far our most favourite way to get to and from Paris. There is plenty of parking at SPDC station and you can also hire a car from there. Book your train tickets here. Note that in Europe it’s not much more expensive to travel 1st class (sometimes just an additional €5); especially worth it if you have luggage. Depending where you are coming from, other useful regional railway stations within reach, besides SPDC, include Angers St-Laud (an hour away) and Port Boulet (20 minutes’ drive).</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Brittany Ferries</image:title>
<image:caption>Depending on where you are coming from within the UK - this French-operated car ferry company offers a variety of crossings, but the nearest to us runs from Portsmouth to Caen with a crossing time of 6 hours and the option of overnight travel. We are 150km / 1hr 40 minutes drive away from Caen Ouistreham. If you take the overnight ferry, you should arrive at La Fuye around 10.30am the following morning. Note that you may not be able to check-in straight away if we have outgoing guests, but we always try to accommodate early check-in requests where possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Eurotunnel Le Shuttle</image:title>
<image:caption>Eurotunnel (now rebranded as Le Shuttle) is hugely convenient if you want to cross exactly when you want, on your own timeframe, with your own car. Flexiplus tickets (which allow you priority boarding onto the next available shuttle regardless of when you arrive) are very expensive now and only worth buying (in my opinion) should you be crossing on a dreaded ‘popular travel day’. Assuming that you aren’t, then a standard ticket works well and you can keep editing your ticket time right up until you arrive, meaning you can usually board the next available train (the same concept as flexiplus but costing you a lot less). Even without ‘massaging’ your ticket timing, a standard ticket gives you a 2-hour window either side of your allotted train. La Fuye is 577km from Calais which equates to 5 hours 30 minutes of driving time. Regardless, it is still one of our preferred ways to travel and you can break the journey with lunch (or better still, get up early and do it in a oner).</image:caption>
